“Hmm?”

The faraway sound of a ringing phone startled Louise from a deep sleep…she'd been dreaming of walking on a deserted beach somewhere…and, just like an enchantingly predictable romantic scene in a movie, she was running toward someone. Some faceless man. She was determined to get to him as quickly as her legs could carry her, almost as if her life…no, her soul depended on it. In reality, she hated running, so it was one of those lovely dreams where she had the body of an Olympic athlete, slender, toned, overflowing with unleashed energy and stamina.

She hit the on button of the phone and put it to her ear, eyes still closed and holding onto wisps of the dream.

"Hi, Louise, it’s Hunter.”

She sat up, giving her head a shake so she wouldn’t sound as though he’d woke her up. A nap between clients had seemed like such a nice idea at the time, especially since she expected a late night with him tonight.

“Oh, hi, Hunter.” Was he calling to cancel their dinner date?

“I’m so looking forward to seeing you later…

…okay, not a cancellation…

“…but I—and I hate to ask you this because it is so rude—but, would you be able to meet me at the restaurant? I have a late meeting, but I should be able to duck out of it just in time to meet you.”

“Oh. No. That’s fine.” She glanced at the clock on the nightstand and realized she had about five minutes to get downstairs for her last client of the day.

“Fabulous—”

“Hunter, I’m sorry, but I need to go—”

“Oh, of course. You’re working too. See you soon, Louise. Thanks again for understanding. ”

“Sure. No problem. See you at seven.”

She looked at the phone in her hand, shaking her head.

Actually she was glad to drive herself. With first dates, she never liked being without an escape vehicle at her disposal. Not that she really expected it to go badly, but, one never knows.
